Philanthropy Begins with Relationships
The sole purpose of the Wilson Memorial Hospital Foundation is to cultivate philanthropic relationships that enhance the hospital’s ability to fulfill its mission and vision. Wilson Memorial Hospital has always been, and will continue to be, focused on the healthcare needs of the people of the communities we serve.
The hospital has a rich history of philanthropy and community support. Wilson Memorial Hospital’s story began in 1913 when the Bluebird Social Club raised $305 for a hospital. Years later, Harriet Scobey Stephenson left a bequest of $10,000 to the county for a hospital. In 1928, the established Shelby County Memorial Hospital Association received 27 acres of land from Judge Harrison Wilson, providing a site for a hospital to be built. Along with additional fundraising, community leaders with vision and fortitude made the hospital a reality. Later, bequests made from Ida M. Key and Fred C. Yager made possible remodeling and expansion projects. Most recently, donations from the community made it possible for Wilson to open the unparalleled Copeland-Emerson Family Birth Center and the Francis Women’s Center.
